Curriculum Integration: Observing a Leaf

Lesson Objectives:
- The Students will observe and describe leaves.
- They will use Measuring and Counting Skills
Materials Required:
1. Leaves - Preferably those chosen by the students
2. Magnifying glass
3. White Paper
4. Colored Pencils
Lesson Outline:
1. Take the class on a nature hike and allow students to pick special leaves of
their own.
2. Before the leaf becomes dry and brittle, have students choose one special
leaf and look at it carefully. They should draw what they see using colored
pencils.
3. Measure the length and width of the leaf and record the measurements on the
bottom of the drawing.
4. Use a magnifying lens to look at the veins of the leaf.
5. Have the class group their drawings according to color, size, shape, and
veination (vein pattern).
Extension Activities:
1. Create a class leaf notebook using the students' drawings.
2. Use the students' leaves to make leaf prints or rubbings to decorate the
room.
