Lesson Objectives:

  • To observe fall color changes.


Materials Required:

  • brown paper or a brown paper bag cut open
  • tissue paper cut in 3x3 pieces in the fall colors: red orange brown yellow and green
  • a background color 9x13 (white or dark blue)
  • glue
  • pencil and markers or crayons


Lesson Outline:

           1.  Have a class discussion on the changes in the seasons.

            2.  Give each child a brown peice of paper and have them crinkle it (they love that part) then have them spread it flat.

            3.  Have the children trace their arm and hand up to their forearm.  This is the trunk.  Cut it out and glue it on the background.

            4.  Give out some of each color of tissue paper to each child and have them crumple them into calls and glue them on the branches (their fingers) and on the ground
                    beside the trunk.

            5.  When they have put enough leaves on for their satisfaction have them draw in the ground with brown and some other details (the sun or clouds).
 
 

Extension Activities:
 
        Making A Hand/Leaf Tree

  • Cut a trunk out of brown construction paper.
  • Give students a variety of fall colored construction paper.
  • Students will then trace thier hands (both right and left) on each piece of construction paper.
  • Students will cut the hands (leaves) out and glue them around the top of the tree in any way they want
  • The ending product will be a beautiful hand/leaf tree.
