"Trees Need More Than Love"
Lesson Objectives:
- The student will be able to locate the major climate zones of the United
States.
- The student will be able to recognize the major factors in determining
climate conditions.
Materials Required:
1. Rand McNally map of the U.S. showing state symbols
2. Climate zone map of the U.S.
3. Vegatation zone map of the U.S.
4. "Trees of North America: by C. Frank Brockman, Golden Press, New York
Lesson Outline:
1. Lecture on how and why states chose their trees.
2. On individual U.S. maps students will write the state tree names on each
state using the large map.
3. Using a Reference Guide, the students will label the conifers on their maps.
4. The students will compare their maps with one another.
5. Class will discuss the patterns found in the location region of the
conifers.
6. Class will compare their findings with the climate and vegetation maps of
the United States.
Extension Activities:
1. The students can compare their findings with their own particular state.
2. The students can research the different types of trees found in their state.
