Willow Art

Willow Art in Frontier Park

The “Willow In Community” project was created in 2007 by Erie Arts and Culture and LEAF to give the community of Erie the opportunity to work with willow artist Bonnie Gale to design and build a living willow installation at LEAF.

The use of live willow rods allowed a structure to be built that will grow in perpetuity. These type of structures frequently include living fences, arbors, tunnels, domes and mazes. It is possible to build several structures and have the structures define design elements on the site. Bonnie Gale, a well-known artist in her field was the lead artist.  Her work has been included in national publications, Vogue Living, & House & Garden magazines, and she is the recipient of many fellowship and awards. For many years the Bay City Gardeners  assumed the ongoing maintenance of LEAF’s willow sculpture.
